Some last words with Thomas M. Disch, and memorial arrangements
One of the last interviews I organized for Tom was with my friend Ed Champion, the guy behind the Bat Segundo show.
Ed just wrote to let me know he just finished uploading the program, which you can hear HERE.
Ellen Datlow tells me that Tom’s body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held in September. I’ll let you know when I know more. Also, I’m trying to find out if there was a cause or charity that Tom supported. If so, I’d like to make a donation in his memory. Maybe you might like to as well.
I’m really tired, and didn’t sleep much last night. Suicide is just so hard to accept.

Damn, that’s a real fu@#ing shame. I know that in his later years he had some less-than-tolerable tendencies that showed up on his blog, but his work was outstanding. The Genocides was one of the most original sci-fi novels I’ve ever read. He will be sorely missed.
And I’m sorry for your personal loss in this as well. My life has also been touched with brushes of suicide, and the feeling of grief that accompanies such acts, whether successful or not, is a profoundly deep one.
Matt,
I hope your grief passes as painlessly as possible; I hope this for everyone who knew him, or was touched by his words. After the worst of the mourning subsides, let it be replaced by sustaining memories of his achievements, and narrative genius, not of his mortal weakness.
