. . . transparency in truth and fiction:
[So prevalent is the fake memoir that the US online magazine Slate has done a tongue-in-cheek "Fake Memoirist's Survival Guide". Write with passionate vagueness, it advises: it's precise dates that can trip you up. Stick with obscure locations, cultures and subject matter. Be a victim: that will make people nervous about doubting you. ("Practise looking offended in the mirror".) Don't leave witnesses, or clues. Don't tell anyone. When cornered, confess - but insist you're telling "the emotional truth".] — provoking stuff.
Kind of makes you want to write a fictional account of a writer writing a false memoir. Wait. What?
