Review: “ORCS” by Stan Nicholls

ORCS by Stan Nicholls

Published by Orbit Books

ORCS, an omnibus edition of a trilogy originally published in the UK, is the story of an orc mercenary battalion, the Wolverines, as they battle the human incursion and its allies that together could spell the end of their world and its magic.

ORCS is not a one-dimensional farce or send-up of the fantasy genre, but instead an action-packed tale reminiscent of Glenn Cook’s “Black Company” novels, featuring an oddly likeable cast of characters waging bloody battle against a nearly undefeatable fate, with plenty of black humor, perverse villainy and intrigue to spice things up along the way.

As the cover says, you’ll probably never look at orcs – the mainstay spear-carriers and cannon fodder of most fantasy adventures – the same way after you read the book. Stryke and his gang are honorable brutes, creatures of grim wit and mighty thew that deserve a place with the best heroes of heroic fantasy.

  3. It’s a great read, and I enjoyed the characters who really bring the story alive. It is very similar to Glenn Cook writing, especially the dialogue I found.

  4. I Just finished reading it last night and I have to say I loved every minute of it. I can understand some people not liking the ending so much, I was a little WTF at the end, til I turned the page and found the advertisement for the next installment then I was stoked until I saw it said 2009 can’t wait. Though not having all three books to read at once may be hard but I will get through because I enjoyed it very much
