Enter the Octopus

More love for Charlie Huston

Hey folks – I’m just popping in here for a second to give some more love for Charlie Huston’s “Joe Pitt” vampire novels. I’ve been on a bit of a binge, see, reading the entire series from start to end. I haven’t done that since – uh – you know – maybe never. And here’s why: these books are absolutely beyond any sort of hackneyed ideas that I might have had about vampire detectives, or vampire protagonists in general, really. Frankly, I thought this particular horror trope had been done to death – no pun – alright, tiny pun – intended.

I was wrong. Huston is hardcore. Like Jim Thompson harcore. Elmore Leonard hardcore. Pitt’s world is one of bloody knuckles, bullets in the heart and blood – always blood.

I thought that the first book “Already Dead” was good, but I just finished “No Dominion,” and compared to it, “Already Dead” was just a warm-up. Drugs and guns and double-dealing power players have Joe behind the eightball, and the only way he’s coming out alive – or something like that – is with both fists swinging.

I’ve started “Half the Blood of Brooklyn,” the third book out of four, and my only problem with these books so far is that they eventually end. Hopefully Huston, and Pitt, have a long life ahead of them.

  2. Hi Matt – Charlie has planned the current story arc over a five-book series, so there’ll be one more instalment to savour in the fullness of time :)
